It mainly reflects the various types of marriage in the 18th Century. In this thesis, the author tries to reveal the predominant effects of money and pedigree sense on people’s marriage, and how money and social position dominate ladies’ choice in marriage and influence their matrimonial value orientation.Key words: money, pedigree sense, marriageIntroductionPride and Prejudice which was originally drafted as The First Impression was written in 1796 and published in 1813. As Austen’s popular novel it talks about trivial matters of love, marriage, family life between country squires and fair ladies in Britain. She mainly deals with the marriage, which is not the result of love but in want of money. The marriage of Darcy-Elizabeth composing love and money is the only ideal one. The power of money conquers love in other marriage cases and the pedigree sense also influences the marriage. Tony Tanner once said: ” Jane Austen, as well as other author, is very clear that no feeling could be extremely pure and no motive could be definitely single. But as long as it is possible, we should make it clear that which feeling or motive plays the leading role.”(1)Background 1.Literature BackgroundIn terms of literature, Austen was in the Romantic Period, The Romantic Movement expressed a more or less negative attitude toward the existing social and political conditions that came with industrialization and the growing importance of the bourgeoisie. The Romantics, who were deeply immersed in the most violent phase of the transition from a decadent feudal to a capitalist economy, saw both the corruption and injustice of the feudal societies and the fundamental inhumanity of the economic, social and political forces of capitalism. In this novel she tried to say it’s wrong to marry just for money or beauty, but it is also wrong to marry without it. She showed clearly her firm belief in the predominance of reason over passion. 2. Economic BackgroundThe primarily agricultural society had been replaced by a modern industrialize one. With the British Industrial Revolution coming into full swing, the Capitalist came to dominate not only the means of production, but also trade and market. The bourgeois and capitalist economy began to flourish. 3. Social BackgroundThe biggest social change in the historical period was the transfer of large masses of the population from countryside to town. The corruption of feudal societies and new Capitalism coexisted at the same time. As a result of the Enclosures and the agricultural mechanization, the peasants were driven out of their land, many drifted to the industrial towns where there was a growing demand for labor. The workers were herded into factories and overcrowded streets, and reduced to the level of commodities, valued only according to the fluctuating demand for their labor. Women and children were treated no differently in this respect from men. The positon of women is lower than man. In the countryside, the aristocratic family still held great power and right that country squires were likely to fawn upon them. However, as the development of Capitalism and the expand of the rank of rich people, the distinction between social strata was becoming smaller and smaller, while money was getting more and more important in people’s mind about social value. Analysis“ It is a true universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” (2) The first sentence in the novel clearly shows the relationship between marriage and money. This sentence implied that only a man with good fortune has a desire to choose a wife. The husband will certainly support his wife. A man without lot of money may have difficulty in proposing marriage. But it is a joke and trap of the author. The majority of the novel will show the opposite meaning of the sentence. Persons who have the requirement are not rich men, but poor and educated women like Bennets’ five sisters and their parents. There were five daughters in Bennets’ family. They lived in a small town called Longbourn. According to the heritage law they had no heirs male, their estate had to be given a distant relation, Mr. Collins. That meant five daughters could not get guarantee for their future life, and the only way at that time was get themselves married . It is a true universally acknowledged that a woman without good fortune have to marry man with a good fortune. Marriage become a market, where personal attractions are weighed against financial consideration.. Young girls are merchandise, man can use money to purchase wife in this market where personal attractions are weighed against financial considerations. We could make sure of the above conclusion from four typical marriage in the novel as follows: Elizabeth—Darcy’s Marriage “ He soon drew the attention of the room by his fine, tall person, handsome features, noble mien, and the report which was in general circulation within five minutes after his entrance of his having ten thousand a year .” (3) From the description of Mr. Darcy at the ball we can know he felt the class-- based pride and was a enormously wealthy feudal lord. He had the “right” to be proud of his money and social status. So he refused to dance with the girls in town and made a scornful remark about Elizabeth’s apperance to his friend. This give her bad first impression, she disliked him for his pride and unconcerned manner. Furthermore, rumors from Wickham deepen her prejudice against Darcy. Her prejudice blinded her to the reality of his developing passion for her. The first marriage proposal to Elizabeth came from Mr. Collins, who was a flatterer and foolish man. If marriage were solely a trade, Mr. Collins would be correct as he lists all the economic and social consideration that lead him disbelieve Elizabeth’s rejection. On the other hand, Elizabeth is attracted to a charming young militiaman, George Wickham. His open friendly manner and flattering words give her good impression. Though she have good feeling on Wickham but she prevent falling in love with him. She says to her aunt, Mrs. Gardiner, “ I will take care of myself, and of Mr. Wickham too. He shall not be in love with me, if I can prevent it.”(4) So when Wickham engaged Miss King for her ten-thousand pound property, she feels free: “They are young in the ways of the world, and not yet open to the mortifying conviction that handsome young men must have something to live on as well as the plain.” (5) When her aunt comment on Wickham’s desertion later, she says,” pray, my dear aunt, what is the difference in matrimonial affairs, between the mercenary and the prudent motive? Where does discretion end, and avarice begin?” (6)Here our heroine Elizabeth is also hard to avoid Mammonism. It makes us interested in the ratio of money and love in her courtship and marriage. She does not accept Collins because they have not any love. She is not a pure mammonist just like Lucas. But she is also not sage. It is impossible for her to marry Wickham, who has no property (She know him in short of moral later). As our protagonist of this novel, Elizabeth is intelligent, active, humorous, perceptive, witted in general. She has her own dignity and personality. This make Darcy fall in love with her gradually. However Darcy’s pride and her prejudice make her declines his first proposal. Certainly Darcy loves her heartily. He was always concerned about her family, try to exclude the difficulty and anxiety for her. To solve Wickham-Lydia elopement scandal he aid Lydia, her little sister to marry. Throughout long-term observation and test Elizabeth change her prejudice and feels regretful for her imprudence and bias. At this moment Lady Catherin de bourgh, who is a cocky grande dame hears the love affairs between Darcy and Elizabeth. She wants her daughter Anne to marry her nephew, Mr. Darcy, to make a union of their property and social status. So she intervene into their love and Elizabeth’s freedom of marrying Darcy or not. Our heroing never promise and strike her insufferable arrogance. This make Darcy know her heart and take proposal to her again. They finally married. Mrs. Catherin help them unconsciously. Her requirement for more money and high social position make a match for Darcy and Elizabeth. It is really a comedy technique, money plays positive roles on their marriage. It is a ideal marriage composing love and money. But money also play an important role on the marriage. 1. If Mr.Darcy had not much money and no social status, he may have no chance to attend the ball. Certainly they can not meet with each other.2. “She had never seen a place for which nature had done more, or where natural beauty had seen so little counteracted by an awkward taste.” And at that moment, ”She felt that to be mistress of Pemberley might be something!” (7)Sentence above were Elizabeth’s psychological behaviors. Obviously, Darcy’s Pemberley Park draw great attention of Elizabeth. The park is a symbol of much money. This kind of pursuit seems to be reasonable. She also had money conception subconsciously. When Jane asked Elizabeth when she fell in love with Darcy. She answers:” I must date it from my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley… .” (8) Apparently she is joking, but we still can understand her potential feeling of pursuing money.
